Door stuck open
Safely, right now
- Don't force it down or keep trying the remote. Leave the door as it is.
- Nobody walks, plays or parks under the door until it has been checked.
- The red release cord stays untouched while the door is open, because the door can fall.
Door won't close
Safely, right now
- Don't keep hitting the button. Repeated tries can do more damage than the first fault.
- Stay out from under the door. If you can see something in its path, like a bin or packed snow, say so when you call.
- Never tape over, bypass or move the little sensors near the floor to force it shut.
Spring snapped
Safely, right now
- Leave the door and the opener alone: no lifting it by hand, no pressing the button.
- Keep everyone, pets included, and every vehicle away from the door.
- The emergency release stays untouched while the door is up, because the door can come down.
Car stuck inside
Safely, right now
- Don't drive into the door or try to force it open.
- Don't pull the release or lift the door if it feels heavy or you heard a bang. That usually means a broken spring.
- Leave the car inside for now and plan another ride.
When a technician arrives at a house in Toronto, the first job is to walk the whole door, from the bottom seal to the header bracket, because the part that made the noise usually has a worn neighbour. Fixing both on one visit means the door stays fixed instead of failing again next month.

The fix, explained · Toronto
What is the door doing?
EmergencyTorsion Spring ReplacementAfter pulling the red release cord, you tried lifting the door yourself and it would barely leave the floor.
The fix
A spring that breaks with the car inside puts the whole morning on hold, and this service is designed to get that door working again in a single visit. The technician arrives with a range of spring sizes, secures the door so it cannot move, identifies exactly which spring the door needs, and installs and winds the replacement.
Until then
When a spring breaks, the safe approach for the household is to leave the door where it is, keep people and vehicles clear, and avoid running the opener, which can damage the top section, the trolley or the gear drive.
Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyOff-Track Garage Door ResetA delivery van backed into the shop's overhead door this afternoon.
The fix
The finish of an off-track reset matters as much as the re-seating. Once the rollers are home and the track is true, the door is disconnected from the opener and moved by hand through its whole travel while every roller is watched in its rail.
Until then
Never run the opener on a door that is off its track or hanging crooked; every cycle drives the racked door harder into the rails and can pull the track from the wall or tear a hinge.

EmergencyGarage Door Cable ReplacementStanding inside with the door closed, you notice the cable on the right side near the floor has gone fuzzy.
The fix
Garage door cables carry the weight of the door as tension held by the springs, which is why the work follows a careful, well-rehearsed sequence rather than simply hooking a cable back on. On a torsion system the technician clamps the door, disconnects the opener and unloads the springs with winding bars before any cable, drum…

EmergencyExtension Spring ReplacementA bang like a dropped toolbox came from the garage last night.
The fix
Garage doors are balanced by one of two spring systems, and the extension kind is the one you find on many single-car doors and older detached garages. Instead of a spring wound on a shaft above the opening, an extension system uses two springs stretched along the horizontal tracks, working through pulleys and cables.

Book soonEmergency Release RepairA previous owner knotted the release cord around the rail and stacked storage shelves right beneath it.
The fix
There are two releases on many garages, and this service covers both. Inside, the red handle drops from the trolley and anyone standing in the garage can pull it.
Until then
Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.
Lift a door by its handles or the gripping points on the panel face, never at the joint between sections, which closes as the door bends around the track.
Book soonGarage Door Opener Diagnosis and RepairThe door goes up perfectly.
The fix
Think of a command travelling through the system. Your thumb presses a button; the radio signal reaches the receiver; the logic board decides to move; the motor turns; a gear drives a chain, belt or screw; the trolley pulls the arm; the arm moves the door.
Until then
Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.
Never drive a vehicle at a closed door to get out; the door collapses and the stored tension in the counterbalance is released.

What the census means at the door
58%
Older homes. About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
In a mature neighbourhood the garage door is often the single largest feature of the front elevation, so keeping the original look matters. Modern insulated doors come in raised-panel and carriage styles that echo the older designs while running on today's torsion hardware.
23%
Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).
Where housing is mostly attached, the common garage entrance may be a rolling grille or heavy sectional door with access by fob or remote, managed by the property. We service these operators, safety edges and photo-eyes, and coordinate with management so residents keep their access throughout.

Let a technician come out to Toronto.
A garage door is heavy and the springs carry real force, so the work in Toronto is done the careful way: door clamped, tension released with proper bars, parts measured before they are matched, and the door run through complete cycles afterwards. Careful is not slow; it is simply how a heavy door should be treated.
Birch Cliff, Crescent Town, Oakridge and The Beaches
Plain language. No jargon, no acronyms. We describe the door's parts the way a neighbour would and answer every question as it comes.
Respect for your home. Shoes covered, tools on a mat, vehicles protected. Working in someone's garage is a privilege and we treat it that way.
Honest options. Where there is more than one way forward, you hear all of them, with the trade-offs, and choose what suits your budget and plans.

Which fix fits?
IfThe opener is decades old and has no safety sensors.
Modern openers reverse on contact and on a broken beam; the upgrade is worth doing for the sensors alone.
IfYou would like to close the door from your phone when you have forgotten.
ThenSmart controller installation.
A small controller pairs with most openers and reports the door's position to an app.
IfA remote has gone missing and you are not sure where.
ThenErase and reprogram remotes.
Clearing the opener's memory and re-pairing the remotes you still have keeps the lost one from opening the door.
IfOn cold mornings the door barely makes it up.
ThenGarage Door Balance Adjustment.
A balance visit follows a settled order.
What to expect, in questions
Why does the door need a balance test after being reset?
Balance shows that the springs are carrying the door's weight so the opener only guides it. After a reset the door is disconnected from the opener, raised by hand to the halfway point and released; a balanced door holds there with little drift. If it falls or shoots up, the counterbalance needs adjusting before the opener is reconnected, otherwise the motor strains and the rollers are pushed out of line again.
How long does the visit take?
A straightforward fin replacement on a single door is often a matter of an hour or two once the technician is set up; a double door with a one-piece stop takes longer, and any jamb repair adds to it. Most of the time goes into checking the door, preparing the surface and setting the contact carefully, since those are what make the seal last. You are given a sense of the timing when the work is confirmed.
Why does the door feel heavier in winter?
Cold stiffens the lubricant in the bearings and hinges and firms up the rubber seals, so the door drags a little more and the springs have slightly more to overcome. A bottom seal frozen to the slab adds to it, and this usually eases as temperatures rise. A door that stays heavy is worth a prompt check regardless of season, since persistent drag can come from binding, an obstructed track, rollers, hinges or cables as well as the spring balance.
What should I check before calling?
Look for the simple things: is the opener plugged in and its light working, has the wall control's lock indicator started blinking, does another remote work, is anything sitting in the path of the sensors, and are the little sensor lights steady. Note what the motor does when you press a button. Do not try to lift a door that is stuck if a spring looks broken. Whatever you find, tell the technician; it shortens the diagnosis.
